Western Australia

Perth and environs: regular modern traction, freight and passenger operations on two gauges. The Hotham Valley preserved steam railway; heavy haul iron ore trains in the north west, Pilbara region.

South Australia

Adelaide region, railway museum, Steam Ranger preserved steam on broad gauge; a look a standard gauge trains (The Ghan and Indian Pacific) and on board two day journey to Perth.

Queensland

Brisbane local traffic and preserved steam; the Ipswich Railway museum; heavy haul electric hauled coal traffic; The Kuranda scenic and Savannahlander preserved trains.

New South Wales

Sydney region: standard gauge passenger trains and the Thirlmere steam museum; modern trains and preserved steam on the main lines south to Victoria; The Zig-Zag 1067mm steam railway.

Victoria

Preserved steam and modern traction on both broad and standard gauge around the state on various lines; Melbourne railway museum, city trams and Puffing Billy.

This 103min programme begins with preserved steam and modern traction in the South Island, over the scenic Arthur's Pass route. The second part features modern traction on North Island: the lines around Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland.

This programme features the following, both special steam and regular operations:

Arthur's Pass, Christchurch to Greymouth.

This scenic route traverses South Island from one side to the other, with snow capped peaks in evidence.

We follow Mainline Steam's preserved Jb class oil burning 4-8-2 there and back, with crossings noted of the regular TranzAlpine passenger service and numerous diesel class DX powered coal trains.

Wellington and suburbs on North Island.

We travel the extensive electrified suburban routes, visit two steam preservation groups and see other trains.

Hamilton area.

A look at the area 25kV system, with both electric and diesel freights to be seen.

Auckland and suburbs.

Various diesel hauled suburban trains, some freights and a tour around the city.
